Education for Foreign Families in Montenegro: Everything You Need to Know

Montenegro has become a sought-after destination. Many families have moved or are considering moving here. An important issue for all families with children is education, whether kindergarten or school – there are options in Montenegro.

Education in Montenegro at a Glance

In Montenegro, education is mandatory for children between 6 and 15, and it is free. Children enroll in Elementary school at the age of 6 and must complete nine grades in total. High school is not mandatory, and there are options for different areas of interest and future careers that will be continued as a craft or academic education. 

Public schools dominantly have a curriculum in Montenegrin, which can be challenging for non-native families planning to settle in this beautiful country. There are private schools with both state certificates and/or internationally recognized curricula. 

International Kindergartens in Montenegro

Preschool used to be mandatory, but that is no longer the case. Children are enrolled in the first grade the year they turn six. • QSI in Podgorica offers an American-style curriculum. Known as “the American School” in Montenegro, it emphasizes a personalized learning approach and college-preparatory education. 
• British International School Arcadia Academy in Kotor follows Cambridge International standards and provides outdoor learning environments in the English language. 
• French European School in Podgorica is supported by the French Ministry of Education. This offers French-based education and the option for CNED remote learning enrollment. 
• Dukley Academy in Budva offers education in English and Russian, emphasizing personalized and project-based approaches and following international and Russian programs. 
• United Kids International in Podgorica is a Pearson International School. It has an elementary school curriculum accredited by the Montenegrin Ministry of Education, as well as a high school program.
• The British Academy in Podgorica also offers elementary school education in English. It has a Cambridge curriculum that prepares students for IGCSE examinations. 
• International School and Kindergarten Maša in Podgorica offers a bilingual state-licensed program and a CLIL program in English.
